Not that long ago we used to joke that soon developers will only need to drag and drop elements on a designer to “program” their applications. Nowadays, it is becoming more and more common for platforms to aim at turning coding into a non-coding effort to emerge.
Fear not dear dev sorcerers as no one will steal away your craft! If you think of it, such platforms are enablers for non-ITs to make their day-to-day tasks easier. They can automate and/or come up with a better UI to get things done. Of course, some of them are used by developers and ITs, but more as a way of solving trivial tasks, instead of writing a brainless bunch of code for that.
Recently our friends from SoftwareONE organized an online seminar. During it, we discussed some Azure services which fall into the aforementioned category of platforms. Below is a summary of the topics we went through.
- Azure Functions – how with less code and maintenance effort we can react to events and execute some logic.
- Azure Logic Apps – having a UI designer to create a workflow triggered by an external event.
- Power Apps – help us with turning low code development into a fully-fledged line of business application
- Azure Communication Services – Easily add text, voice, video, telephone over IP to your apps
